Installing Free BSD 5.4
Boot from CD and press Enter at the menu.
Choose custom install - gives more control and allows you to go back and change things!
Skip option 2 - set install defaults - they're basically OK for now
Option 3 - Slice editor - press A to use all of the disc and press Q to leave the slice editor
Choose the FreeBSD boot manager option and then option 4 - label editor - choose Auto and then Q out of this
Option 5 Distributions - choose 8 (User) - gives a basic setup. Accept the option to install ports collection and OK.
Option 6 - choose CD then from option 7 choose commit install now.
Installation will start and you will have to wait about 5 minutes.
When installation finishes you are given a last chance to use the general configuration menu. Take it and set the root password to something secure (this is the highest level user; anyone with the root password can do anything to your computer!)
Go to the user management option and add a new user; this is the user you will use when you want to remotely manage your server. The name is unimportant but it must be a member of the group wheel
In the console menu, set the keyboard to UK (or wherever you are!)
In the time zone menu pick your local time zone
In the networking menu, enter the appropriate values for your network cards. A key point is that the DNS server will need to be one which can resolve your internal Exchange server, not your public MX (which is going to be this MailScanner box). Make sure that the SSHD box is checked - you will need SSH later.
Exit from the menu and reboot (remove CD or it will all start again!)
When it reboots log on as user root
